Here are my top five tips for flying to Japan! For our trip we flew with ANA and were thoroughly impressed with the service- these tips will just make your flight a bit more comfortable.
Pack an Extra Suitcase: If you are an otaku like us, you will probably want to purchase fandom merch of your favorite series. To maximize our luggage space, we packed our clothes into a smaller suitcase and then packed this one inside of a larger suitcase. This meant we only had one bag to keep track of on the flight there but had plenty of room for souvenirs on the return trip.
Put Your Toothbrush and Deodorant in Your Carry-on: After 12 hours in the air I was in a zombie state. Having these items on hand to freshen up in the lavatory before we landed really made me feel so much better. It’s a little action that can make a big difference.
Bring Water: While the airline does provide complimentary food and drink, we found ourselves getting massively dehydrated after such a long time in dry cabin air. Having a few large bottles of water on hand helped to prevent this on the return trip. Obviously, purchase beverages after you go through security so they don’t get confiscated.
Mark your Luggage: In a sea of plain black suitcases it was a challenge to find our bags in the baggage claim. Using colorful luggage tags or even decorating them with stickers can make them stand out in a crowd.
Dress in Layers: Because we were travelling with the rotation of the earth, the sun was beating on the plane the entire trip. This made the interior of the plane surprisingly warm, especially since I was in a window seat. While this may not be the case for your journey, I recommend dressing in comfortable layers so you can remove a few if needed.
